The National Union of Ghana Students has called on
the University of Ghana to “as a matter of urgency, recall all thirteen (13)
students suspended for their alleged involvement in the dehumanizing treatment
on one Amina Haruna on 6 May, 2011. Amina Haruna was accused of allegedly
stealing a laptop and a mobile phone on campus and was subsequently subjected
to physical assault, with some of the students molesting her. Following
investigations by Legon authorities, the 13 students were suspended and handed
over to the police for prosecution. A High Court in Accra on Tuesday discharged
all 13 male students for want of prosecution. NUGS in a release today accused
the Legon authorities of taking the decision in a “rush to save their already
tattered reputation by rusticating and suspending those students without having
conducted a very thorough investigation into the matter”. The nation’s students’
body further described an unfortunate “that some section of society had taken
sides on the issue, thereby clouding the main substance of the issue”. NUGS is
also demanding an apology from the University Council of Legon for the
deficiency in their hasty decision.
