BAMBOO USED IN MANUFACTURING BICYCLE IN KUMASI


The Chief Executive Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Honorable Samuel Sarpong paid a working visit to the Bamboo Bikes Limited, a local company manufacturing Bicycle with bamboo in the Kumasi Metropolis. Speaking during his visit at the company headquarters located at Atonsu-Agogo Fabi, Mr. Sarpong stated that he is happy to see this opportunity which was identified by the Millennium Cities Initiative (MCI) in 2007 and presented at the Kumasi day in New York in September 2008 now being a reality for the production of bicycle with the Bamboo tree which is mostly available in the Ashanti Region. Mr. Sarpong said government is ready to ensure that the private sector is well equipped to be able to facilitate and strengthen the private sector for its growth and development especially to meet the purpose of the manufacturing of the Bamboo Bicycle to support the large number of people in the rural and the urban area in transportation. Meanwhile, Mr. Kwame Sarpong the chairman and founder of the Bamboo Bicycle Company Limited on his part said the company apart from manufacturing the bicycle also in addition produces tooth pick with the excesses of the Bamboo that would have gone wasted after the manufacturing of the Bicycle. He further added that the company now employ 34 workers and also in addition provides employment for the Bamboo harvesters in the respective communities where these Bamboos are harvested and also teach them the practice to conserving the environment by re-planting the Bamboo after harvesting it.
