NUGS CONGRESS

A seven-member committee made up of Student Representative Council and local National Union of Ghana Students representatives of the various school associations in the country have been set up to take charge of the union until further notice. This has become necessary after the 46th Annual congress of the National Union of Ghana Students convened to elect new executives was yesterday marred by violence, resulting in the inability of the union to elect new executives. The congress, which began on Wednesday at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, came to an abrupt end on Sunday when chaos broke out prior to the election. There were disagreements over the delegates list to be used for the contest, following a re-uniting of two different ranks of the union led by Osman Ayariga and Peter Kodjie, who both had claimed they were NUGS presidents, forcing the electoral commission and the Ashanti Regional Police Command who had moved to the venue to ensure order, to recommend a suspension of the voting exercise. The congress has since ended and delegates have returned to their campuses. The tenure of the current executives has expired and the interim committee would take charge until a new congress is called to elect new executives. It is expected a special delegate’s congress would be called soon to elect new executives. Coordinating Secretary for the National Union of Ghana Students, Mr. Charles Oduro Kwarteng has discloses that the some of the national officers at the delegate congress were not impressed about the validation of the ballot papers for the elections. According to Mr. Oduro Kwarteng, this created a heated augments among the members and the executives that was postponed to today by the electoral commission because of the late start of the election but which did not materialized. However all national executive officers of the National Union of Ghana Students have been suspended. The 46th Annual congress of the union at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology came to an abrupt end when chaos broke out prior to the election on Sunday. The Congress has been suspended till further notice. Meanwhile a seven-member committee made up of SRC and local NUGS representatives of the various Universities has since taken charge of the union.
